Gum disease is an inflammation of the gum line. This can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. The three stages of gum disease are gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. Gum disease can be painless, so it is important to be aware of any of the following symptoms:
- Swollen, red, tender or bleeding gums
- Gums that recede or move away from the tooth
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste in mouth
- Loosing teeth
- Visible pus surrounding the teeth and gums
In order to prevent seeing a specialist, our hygiene department is able to treat many levels or perio using a technique called “scaling and root planning”. This is a process of numbing the gum tissue, then cleaning plaque out from beneath the gum line. This allows your gums to snap back against the teeth in a restorative fashion. Please see the video below for more on this treatment!
